Nigella - "African Bride"
Pure white dimpled petals with a lovely pearly sheen ring a crown of plummy purple anthers in the center of each bloom. A flower arranger's delight and long-lasting when cut fresh, it's crowned seed capsules become unique accents in dried flower arrangements. A delicate-looking but sturdy, easy-to-grow flower that hums with bee activity in early summer. The dried seed pods are gorgeous in arrangements too.
HARVEST
Harvest freshly opened flowers; for dry use once seed pods have dried.
GROWING
Full Sun
Grows 24-30” inches tall.
Space 10-12 inches apart
NOTES
Nigella papillosa was once called Spanish Nigell and found in gardens in the 1600s in England, when a rare double form was most coveted. Bees adore these plants and alight on the broad petals to gather pollen and nectar from the tufts of purple stamens in their centers. Delicate grassy-green foliage and a bushy habit support the summer's bloom. The curvy, inflated seed capsules have won over fans of dried flower arrangements.
